Hearthstone: 12 years of ups and downs

I probably haven't played Hearthstone in 2 or 3 years, maybe 4. A quick game once a year or so, to see how it feels. I gave it yet another shot last week and for the first time in a long time, it felt pretty good. Maybe I'm coming back… But man, what a journey it's been for Hearthstone. So many ups and downs.

In 2014, Hearthstone released and was everywhere. Free, easy to learn, it ran on pretty much anything. And it took Twitch by storm. Blizzard has cited something like 100 million registered accounts, which is pretty good. Sign-ups, not people still playing, but you get the idea.

Then things started to slow down a little over time: continuous expansions, massive power creep, rotation fatigue, you name it. Then at some point, packs started to feel too pricey. Remember, 10 gold every 3 wins? That was greedy.

Most people didn’t storm out. It didn't happen overnight. They just stopped logging in. Battlegrounds did help to retain fans of auto-battlers.

Then an equally slow recovery, but not of 2015 numbers. There are more free cards, easier on-ramps and bolder card designs. CATACLYSM landed in March and Escape from Violet Hold in July. Reign of the Black Empire arrives October 20, and the Monk follows in March 2027, the first new class since the Death Knight in 2022.

Let’s stay honest, though. Third-party trackers disagree with each other, but one tracker estimates around 2.5 million monthly players in August 2026, down ~20% over the past year. Those are estimates, but they don’t qualify as a boom.

In 2026, context is what puts things in perspective. Here’s the thing: surviving twelve years in a genre in which games die young is no small thing.

Maybe Hearthstone is not the giant it once was, but it’s not a corpse, far from it. It’s a veteran card game that reached a relative stability, even if the numbers are sliding. It’s one of the few digital CCGs from that era that survived this long and is still shipping new content, including a brand-new class.

What’s next? Will it grow? Will it shrink? We’ll find out with Reign of the Black Empire and the Monk class.

In the meantime, Hearthstone is in a spot where you can enjoy it and really dive in. The free cards and easier on-ramps mean you can jump in or come back without buying the new expansion first. It’s not perfect, and it’s not 2015, but if you’ve been curious, now is a good time!

Have fun!
